New Zealand-based illustrator Ross Murray has an eye for natural and urban landscapes rendered in vivid minimal colour palettes, using the influence of vintage advertising and comics to create surrealist pop illustrations and vintage travel-inspired artwork.

He also makes comics and picture books, with clients including Hardie Grant imprint Little Hare, and is known for his covers and internal illustrations for Lonely Planet’s ‘Epic’ series. Ross has contributed album review illustrations to Rolling Stone, and some of his other clients include Greenpeace, The Washington Post, Apple, Disney, Garage Project, NASA, and Volkswagen.

Once you get me started, I won’t shut up about…
Comics! It's my first love, but I've only found time to actually create my own in the last ten years or so. Outside of film, comics are the medium with the most storytelling potential in my humble opinion.
My superpower is…
Anxiety! It comes with a heightened sense of observation, a desire to plan ahead, and rigorous self-criticism. All pretty annoying to live with actually, but ultimately rather useful when it comes to quality control.
My project I’m proudest of to-date is…
Designing and illustrating work for NASA as part of their Galaxy of Horrors poster series. It was an amazing experience working with NASA and an amazing challenge trying to visualise 'dark matter'! Oh and also, designing an official poster for Sun Ra!
My process is a mixture of…
Studying reference from life / the real world and translating that into something deceptively simple and somewhat other-worldly.
My current tool of choice is…
A Wacom Cintiq. I still love to draw on actual paper, but it's hard to find the time!
I’d describe my style as…
An evolution and occasional synthesis of both vintage travel posters and vintage comics with a particular focus on colour and composition.
