Grace J. Kim is a Korean-Canadian illustrator based in the New York City area. Her work combines atmosphere, light, and carefully observed details to create images that feel familiar and emotionally resonant.

Inspired by moments when light transforms a place, as well as by architecture and nature, she approaches illustrations with an interest in capturing not just how a place looks, but how it feels.

Grace has collaborated with clients including Apple, The New Yorker, The New York Times, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, OpenAI, Penguin Random House, and more.

My project I’m proudest of to-date is…

My Roe v. Wade cover for The New York Times Sunday Review and holiday greetings for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. I love creating images that balance atmosphere with structure, especially when architecture plays a leading role.

My dream project would be…

Collaborating with institutions like Storm King Art Center (getting to draw nature and structure in conversation with one another? Yes, please.), or creating a campaign for a summer event and seeing my work woven throughout the city.

For me, the best kind of projects are...

The ones that revolve around light, atmosphere, seasonality, and a sense of place.

I'd describe my style as...

Capturing a scene from a memory. I think carefully about texture, temperature, wind, light, and small emotional details to make each illustration feel immersive. Most of my work is created with the hope of offering viewers a brief moment of peace.

Once you get me started, I won’t shut up about…

Planning the itinerary for a trip to my favorite place on Earth: Hawaii. From surf spots, hidden beaches and local food spots to the best sunrise hikes, I can happily spend hours mapping out the ultimate island adventure.
